I always looked at motorcycles as a "soul" satisfying investment. Been worth every penny to me !!

But if your looking for a different model, ABS etc then the 2011 or 2012 with the 103 and ABS etc are great bikes and probably worth the $.
I was riding a 05 fatboy with a 95 Stage 2 engine and my box stock FLTRX with 103 is easily as fast for usable tq, now with a Stage 1 on the 103, A/C , complete exhaust (no cat) and a Power Vision it is stronger than my 95 was and gets better mileage . But I would not have taken the hit to change just for the engine, I wanted a Touring Bike and I wanted ABS so it was worth it to me.
The guys here are right, there isn't much difference between a 96 and a 103 if both are bone stock. Yeah, on paper there is a difference but in reality you'll hardly be able to feel the power difference. If you're upgrading simply to get more power save yourself a crap ton of money and just work on your 96.
For a "Stage 1" upgrade:
Put on a pipe (FuelMoto, Fullsac, S&S, whatever), a free flowing K&N style filter (BigSucker, FuelMoto, SE, doesn't really matter), a set of slip ons (pick out what you think look and sound cool) and a tuning device (PC-V, SEPST, TTS, FuelPak, whatever). A dyno tune will help.
If that's not enough toss in a set of cams. In your application a TW 6-6, SE 255, Andrews 48 etc would work just peachy. A hundred different guys here will give you a hundred different answers on what cams to get. A full "Stage 1" and a dyno tune are more or less mandatory for a cam swap.
FWIW you can go to FuelMoto's website and they'll sell you a complete, proven in the real world, kit. There are a bunch of other websites that will do the same.
If money is not an object here FuelMoto sells a killer 107 kit that will blow your hair back. The difference from 96 - 103 isn't much but going to a 107 is huge. Reasons being: There's a lot more to a "107" kit than a few cubic inches. You'll go to 10.5:1 compression with a Wood 555 cam, air cleaner, pipes, and mufflers or in plain English 68hp to 106hp give or take. If that isn't enough for you get a Honda CBR1000RR.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
They bore your existing jugs, new pistons, new cams, re-map = $700. Price includes a 1 year warranty on parts & labor.
If 103 is what you want, this would seem to be a better (cheaper) option than getting rid of your existing bike.
Anywho... i had myself convinced to the point where i was going to start looking, until i rode a 2011 w/103 on a trip we did with a few buddies. No noticeable difference to my 2010 with hi flo AC and new tune.
I personally am saving for motor upgrades if/when i get the chance
