When I first got my bike I made the mistake of getting the oil dipstick gauge instead of the dash oil temp gauge. Lucky me I dropped the dipstick today when I did my oil change and it is broke. It still plugs the hole and measures the oil level, but I'm going to put the old dip stick back in and get a dash oil temp gauge. Anyone have any ideas on what is the best one to get, and where the best place is to get it?
I went with the HD unit about 5 years ago and it is still going strong. There is also an after market unit from Roger McEwan that is widely used and is a very good match to the HD guages. The link is a start and you may want to do a google search for a matching unit. It is an easy installation too.
for me, i'd rather look at the scenery than stare at the oil temp gauge--- oil pressure yes, temp....nah. I do have the dipstick if something really important was going on.
but it's your money, and a good attempt at putting something useful in the place of the air temp
Got an HD Temp gauge that matches my other gauges. When I installed it I moved the Volt gauge to the Air Temp gauge hole. Now I can monitor Oil vitals on one side of the fairing. I spend a lot more time watching the scenery than I do the gauges :-) But it's nice to know what's going one with the motor. Oh, and got mine from Lake Shore Harley via the internet. They have great pricing and fast shipping.
I have the HD gauge also, easy to install and very happy with it. I also had a problem with the dip stick temp. I believe Marlins makes an oil temp gauge for harley also.

I have the HD electronic dipstick gauge and I too like to watch the scenery but I do think checking the oil level without having to remove the dipstick and try to read it to check the engine oil level is nice. (Came with the bike not sure if I would pay the $150.00 if it wasn't already there).
Thanks everyone, just what I needed to know. This is a great forum. It's like having hundreds of buddies with similar interests within ear shot at all times, but you don't have to house and feed all of them.
