mikuni carb install
he guys, need some help. just bought a mikuni carb for my 06 roadking , would like to know if there is anything special i need to install it. im very mechanicly inclined but not sure what the steps are . do i need special tools? are there settings? can i just pop off my old one and install the new one. any insight on this would be great . thanks
If your old carb is not Mckuni, than you might need a new set of throttle cables. I made mine work. If your carb is bigger, you might need to shim the rear of your fuel tank so it clears the carb. Mine went up by 1/4 inch!
Try the carb with it's current settings & adjust from there!

Your carb comes off fairly quickly. Pull it & compare the mating ends. Look at the cable guides on your stock carb & compare to your new one. After that, your down to air breather mounting to the engine. Take a look, it should be strait forward!
the spigot mount is the same- cables need changing, and then air cleaner and backplate, however the mikuni is supported to the motor.
fuel line should be easy
jetting and tuning? hmmm. you'll have to read up and get some basic settings to start with, how are you at tuning?
DON'T throw away the stock CV carb- IMHO it's much better carb, and you may find you want to go back to it.
The CV is easily tuned, easily modded, self compensates for altitude and temp changes ( air density) and supports motor over 100 HP, while getting good economy

It's an easy swap. Sometimes a little minor fin grining is require but they fit fine. Get the Mikuni tuning manual. It's a must. Setting up the choke control properly is critical. Read the book. I know two guys who took off their Mikunis because they only got 30 mpg. They said thier bikes never ran so good as with the Mikunis but no milage. That was because the choke control was set up wrong. I can get nearly 50mpg if I stay out of it with an HSR45 on a 100+ hp torque Twin cam.

It should be an easy install, If it is the later Mikuni, it will use your stock cables, stock choke cable, but be sure to use the Mikuni Spring and Plunger on your stock choke cable. DO NOT use the Harley spring and plunger. It will make the bike run rich. The carb will plug into your stock manifold if it is a 42mm. You may have to file down some of the fins on the Cyl if it hits when you push it into the manifold, but thats really simple. I had to file some on the front and rear Cyl. On my Fat Boy, I run a 20 pilot jet, The stock needle in the number 2 clip from the top, 165 main jet, and a 50 pump nozzel. Works really well.
