I know this has been discussed before, and options such as an oil cooler, new pipes or fuelpak have been suggested. I just got back from the HD dealer to drop off my RK for it's 1k service and the tech told me that the reason it gets so hot on the right side is the catalytic converter, and they will remove it for $300 and it will make all the difference in the world as far as sound, power and of course, HEAT. Does this sound fishy to anyone else? If this is a known issue, why are they charging $300 to correct?
Thaey are right except for what they want to remove the cat. Their are treads on here where yhey have pic to show you step by step to do it yourself if you want. Otherwise see if their is an INDY that will probably do it much cheaper. Heck, I'd do it for ya free if you were closer.
$300 is not a bad deal ride in, ride out. ( if you can't do this yourself)
I am surprised they are offering this - most dealers will suggest in a quiet way, or send to an indy shop.it is "tampering"..
"Known Issue"--- it's an air cooled motor between your legs it's gonna get hot.
there are some steps that'll help, such as removing the cat ( or buying new header pipes), adding nightrider.com XIEDS ( which is what I use), tuners etc.
I live in PHX, I added the H-D oil cooler this summer and it may be helping, at the very least it adds extra oil capacity -slightly, the jagg oil cooler may be better.
But that really is the price for buying into antiquated technology.
I went to Harbor Freight and spent $40 for tools to remove the cat materal and then $25 for a guy at Midas to re-weld it. Do it yourself and the money you save will buy a tuner!!!
BTW,that's the first time I've heard a dealer say they'd remove the cat.
The link you want is in the touring section, "Todays project, gutted a 2011 headpipe" It's simple!!!!

I also say to put a oil cooler on. I don't see why anyone would run without one, and think HD should include them from the factory. My Road King had one put on before I picked her up, and when I bought my Wide Glide last week I ordered an oil cooler and will be installing as soon as it comes in.
Look at American Custom, they do a exchange for your head pipes for their catless pipe for $ 199.00 or add a few $ and keep your pipes in case you need to go back to stock later , they also have their slip ons for 185 a set exchange or keep yours and add $
Just read a law suit against Harley from the US District Court Eastern District of California about overheating. It was sent to me by HD Forums. I can forward it to you.....Struens
