I am on the road and 400 miles from the nearest HD dealer.. It appears that we have a VSS sensor that has gone bad ... code P0501 No speedo ..odometer cruise..signals won't cancel. Bike runs fine...any reason we can't keep going until we can get this taken care of..?
With no speedo, keep that speed way down, don't need a speeding ticket. If you can't wait til you get home, any HD shop can do the work. I say this,if only you still have it under warranty.
Definitely sounds like the speed sensor. Mine went bad on me with the exact same symptoms. I rode it for about a week until I could get it replaced. As others have said watch your speed (stay with traffic) and also beware of your signals not cancelling. It's real easy to forget that they don't cancel and you give cages bad info.
I didn't think you could be 400 mi away from a Harley dealer unless you're not in the US. I wouldn't give it a second thought. I'd ride it to a dealer.
Have you checked to see that it is plugged in correctly?
This is first on the diagnostic tree:
Inspect connector [65]. Is connector mated properly?
If no then:
Remove and inspect Vehicle Speed Sensor. Inspect for debris and clean if necessary. Place Speedometer into diagnostic mode and clear fault codes. Connect all circuits and ride motorcycle for approximately 1.0 mile (1.6 km). Check for Speedometer function. Speedometer functioning properly?
Thanks guys for all the response...We are in the middle of Oregon, headed to Reno...Just want to be sure this problem won't strand me on the side of the road. Not worried about a speeding ticket..got a gps.
I live in Reno if you need some help just let me know I also have a trailer if you brake down. Also my 09 had a problem with the plug down below the frame on the side under the oil filter. Turns out when on vacation in oregon we hit rain and the plug got wet I unplug it hit it with WD40 and back on the road.
