Default Wind Buffeting and Shield Replacement Suggestions

I have a 2000 Road King Classic with a stock windshield (I think it's 19"). I am noticing at speeds over 45 mph, there is wind buffeting and after 55 it shakes my head pretty bad.

After using my hand to feel where the wind is coming from, I am confident that the wind is coming from over the windshield and not under it.

I am 6'1" and I can see about 2-3 inches over the stock shield. So, I am thinking a replacement is in order.

In my perfect world, I would like to find a high quality windshield, that's low cost (maybe even reuse by stock hardware), and fixes the buffeting issues.

Any recommendations on brand and new size??

I have heard stuff about Clearview and Long Ride... I would be interested in hearing your thoughts...

Thanks in advance!!

I think the stock windshield is 20 inches high. Go to a shorter 16 inch or taller 22 inch to move the wind to a location that doesn't buffet. I'm 6'2" and the stocker is fine for me. Would go with the tall one if I toured a lot of long trips, though.

I have had a bunch of bikes over the years.........mostly sports bikes and a few Harley Dyna's........(no shields).

When I got my Road KIng, I wanted a easy chair ride. I went through 5 or 6 shields of differant heights and configurations.

I ended up with a 16" clearview recurve........(nose height for me).......and a Laminar LIP. Also installed the Harley tee stem deflector as well as the fork deflectors.

Do a search ........this site was a big help to me.

I ride with my face shield up..........(cept in the rain)...... and have NO buffeting what so ever.

Klock Werks Billboard Flare. Do a search, there's some info on this forum. Also, go to Klock's web site for more info and a video of the wind tunnel testing they did during the development.

smart to move your hand around and think about where the air is coming from.

the bigger the profile you push through the air- the larger low pressure zone behind it and the resulting eddies and drag.

you may just find better results with a smaller windscreen.

on a couple of my bikes at highway speeds I actually get a better ride with no windcreen

if you wear a helmet you may find a different design is more stable at speed.

i usually don't, but when I have too, I use a shorty H-D with a little duckbill in the back which is remarkably stable in the wind.

the lexan windscreens are easily cut if you have a rotozip--- if the bottom edge is hidden by hardware, cut it there- it's an easier cut.

Not sure the op who has a Road King can compare what he's feeling to your bike with a batwing. I'm thinking the aerodynamics are going to be a bit different.

I have had the same issue, mine is a 2003 RK, I am 6'2" 275 and the wind would almost make vision difficult it buffeted so hard. I went the route of different shields and stock was the least bad, I added the triple tree baffle and a set of leg deflectors but it was the batwing I installed that did it for me.

All the adds made some difference, the batwing is not so good without the baffle and the leg deflectors minimize the road spray in the rain, I ride at times no shield, just a shield or the full fairing, just what I feel like when I want to go out.
