Default Head Work?

I just completed my stage 1 upgrade on my 2012 FLHTK. Good improvement over stock but would like a little more bottom end and mid range torque. Thinking of going with the SE255 cams or the 26's. Is there much of an advantage to doing mild head work with these cams?

It's cams you want- selecting them depends or your expectations, riding style, weight and gearing of bike.

IF you think you will be doing further upgrades in the future you want to select parts that work together--- because it's easier to select "performance" parts that do not complement each other.

you want to be looking at a reputable vendor who has proven systems, whether is S&S, fuel moto or other.

If you wanna pick up the equivalent of about 7 horsepower, detach the tour pak. the lost weight will give some of what you are looking for.

Mike, thanks for the advice. My current upgrades are SE Ventilator, V&H Power Duals, V&H Monster Ovals and SEPRT. My goal is an increase in bottom/mid range torque (2000-4500 rpm). I ride two up usually fully loaded for extended touring. Rider/passenger combined weight is about 350lbs. Removing the tour pac is not an option for me.

got it, suggest that you consider when touring comfort is key and range between fuel stops.
performance work may give you a 'sportster' fuel range.
and when rolling added power wouldn't much come into play unless passing.

power package?- check donny peterson at heavy duty if you are near scarborough
they've been there for a long time and were on the twin cam before anyone else

Thanks Mike. I've been to Donny's shop before when I lived in TO. Any idea what kind of change in mpg these cams would cause?

Headwork will greatly help both the tq & hp,but I don't know how much you would see with the 255, that's a tq cam.I don't know if I would do head work with that cam,or if it would even help it!! If you take a midrange cam & do headwork you going to automatically see an improvement on the bottom end!! JMHOP!!

Talked to the dealer this morning and they suggest a SE254e which by HD's description is a mid range cam. Any experience with this cam on a stage 1 103 engine? Any additional work recommended with this cam?

What's the intake close on the 254 cam?? Intake close determines what kind of cam it is.I don't know if you will find to many guys running HD cams. They don't hit hard enough!! With the right set up, I guess they will get the job done though!! Make sure you get the head work done, & that the heads get cc'd to make the compression spot on.The compression, heads,& cam must match to make it run like it should. It's going to need a dyno tune,a good tuner, & exhaust to match.Get your pocket book ready for a beating!!! lol.Ask me how i know?? lol!!!
