Default 99 Ultra classic *need help finding bigger starter*

Hey guys and gals

Looking to get a starter for my fathers HD ultra classic.

its a 99 Vtwin (twin cam 88) has stroker crank big bore cyls high compression, ported head cams ext... (i know they had to tune it down a slight bit cause he didnt want to race fuel or what not.

He does have the decomp valves on the cylinders and all.

Anyways. He has a stock starter and its not working for his set up. Most of the time he has to use a jump start pack to juice the battery some more to get it going after a good few tries.

Im looking into buying one for him for his xmas present but I don't want to buy the wrong one.

How many cranking KW should I aim for on the starter and where can i find a good priced one? will he need a bigger battery for the bigger starter?

ive seen them go from 1.2kw to 2kw.

I tried doing a search but im not that knowledgeable in these bikes so not sure what works for his bike and what doesn't.

Biggest one I found on ebay so far was 1.4kw for 168 or somewhere in those lines. But im thinking on going bigger.

I was looking at something like this... but what gets me is ""Fits some stock applications on Big Twins where 3/4” longer body is not a problem"" i got no clue if it will fit or not...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTIMA-START...#ht_2407wt_698

Thanks and appreciate any help!

If you need more detailed information just let me know

Cheers

Jesse

1.) the "starter craze" of the 90's went the way of the hula hoop-- crap imported chrome covered starters are very hit and miss

2.) KW only signifies how much electrical power the motor can take from the battery--- it has NOTHING to do with the turning power they produce--- if you've ever been around motors for swimming pool pumps you know that those motors are rated in horsepower

3.) the stock H-D starter holds up very well--- think about having it serviced.
Clean up the commutator, replace bearings, rebuild the solenoid or clean up the contact disc

4.) battery good- test it, does it put out over 400 CCA- ? the Deka AGM is a good battery

replace the cables, make sure the ground connections are clean and tight- if there is not one there add a ground strap between the rubbermounted motor and the frame ( usually from the inner primary to the frame near the swingarm)

make sure the bike is properly tuned to fire when starting--- is the ignition firing on 1st rotation, or on the 2nd or 3rd?
Carb or EFI- ?
Timing retarded

with compression releases starting should be easy-- and are they closing 1st, 2nd, 3rd rotation?

Flywheel weight ?

when a motor stops ( any motor) it ALWAYS stops on the comp stroke, when starting the motor often has to be turned past TDC to get momentum ( and draw air/fuel) to start.
On my hicomp bike I flick the starter switch to get the piston over, then press and hold to start.

IF the starter whines and the motor is not turning- stop...the windings will burn up

BTW welcome to the forums

mike

I can't imagine the stock starter (in good condition) and a healthy battery combined with functional compression releases not being able to start the bike. After the initial boost off does the bike start on the next try?

If it is starting with a jump pack, then I would think the battery is the problem. May need a stronger/new battery and that may take care of the problem. With compression releases you should not need a bigger starter. My brother has a built engine on his 2005 Road Glide and he starts it fine with a stock starter and compression releases.

Sounds like he has a 103. Using a TTS, adjust your cranking fuel and timing so that it starts right.

The bike is EFI

It got tuned by a HD dealership on a dyno.

All i was able to get out of my dad was that the flywheel is a Screaming eagle 110.

Not sure on timing

It sounds like the comp release are only closing after a few turns from the sound.

He just inspected the wiring making sure everything had a clean ground and so on checked out good. (as far as i know)

The starter doesnt whine away, it rolls the bike over then "locks" after a sec or two if it doesnt start up

Ive seen him tap the starter to roll the bike over then get at it. sometimes it works sometimes it dont... its a big hit or miss. But its been getting harder to start as time goes on...

Thanks for the quick response!

he said its 110cc kit if that tells you guys anything lol

He just told me it wont even roll over at all without the jumper pack now...

With the jumper pack its having issues but manages to turn it over. seems like a hit or mis now for it to start. Starter likes to lock up after a couple turns of the crank.

But like i mentioned... it got worse over time. except the starter always seemed to have "locked" not whine away

Put a new battery on it before you really do need a starter!

The battery is new from this year. has 1 summer on it.

I know the starter is stock from 99 and never been touched though so do you guys think just rebuilding the starter should fix the issue?

110 TQ on back wheel 95HP on the dyno he ran it on

Appreciate all the help so far!

Thanks
