Could you build a 113/117/120 for cheaper? I know the crate motor with 20% off is a good deal. Just wondering?
Pro's- Build it to your specs and cam choice
Con's- Don't have a take out motor as a spare or to sell.
What are you opionions or builds.

One con of 120R - most kits have some sort of warranty, 120R has no warranty

I would suggest that a performance motor would come from a performance name- S&S or Jims come to mind.

a stock block can only go so far- a purpose built motor designed from the ground up has a chance--- and parts designed to work with each other towards the specific weight and gearing of the application.

I'm not planning on one and have not looked into the 120R--'cause H-D is not exactly focused on reliable high performance...they build pretty good bikes in bulk

No, the 120R crate motor is a deal; you won't touch that kind of performance with a purpose built engine. Comparing apples to apples, you would have to pull the original engine to bore the cases, fit the Lefty crank bearing and replace the crank. The 120R has the 4.625 Pro Stroker cranks assembly which is not welded but the press fit tolerances are tighter than the OEM cranks. You would need head work or the MVA heads and the billet cam plate. BTW, you can spend another $300 and run any cam you choose in the 120R; not stuck with the 266E.

By the time you bought pistons, cylinders, cams, lifters, pushrods and gaskets plus the above cost, pretty sure you would have mor than $4500 invested. Not to mention the manhours, shipping cost to send stuff out and back, etc. as compared to R/R an engine.

You then have the option of reducing the cost of the 120R by selling the sacrificial engine for $1000-$1200 or so.

IMHO, the 120R is one of the best moves the MoCo has made against the aftermarket in a long time. I have built several big bore engines and I would opt for and recommend to others to at least consider the 120R crate or kit before tackling a one off project. It's just to easy and the price is right.

One other point, we have all heard and read about the problems a while back with Rev Performance piston/cylinder kits and recently Axtell has had their problems. The MoCo has never had cylinder/piston issues; you can pull down a TC88 with 35K miles on it and the bore will show the hone marks and the piston coating will look like new.

JMHO.

I too am considering the 120R for my 06 FHLRS, I haven't read yet of anyone running one carbed though.

Anyone care to share there thoughts on what carb to use on the 120R?

only thing that sucks about the 120r, Crank. pretty bad when some people can't install gear drive cams on a motor that hasn't been started yet due to crank runout.

A bone stock 120R has a pretty serious level of performance! Many of us would be happy to fit one without changing cams, or using the stock cam drive system. In any event, they are 'racing' engines and I suspect they are built with tighter run-out tolerances than other TCs.

I have to disagree with the race engine statement. This engine is a mild 10:5 to 1 compression. It has good driveabilty with a proper tune and the 266 cam. It is cheaper than building a engine from scratch.

Read the SE catalogue!

"The foundation of the Draggin’ Bagger class is the Screamin’ Eagle SE120R engine, a fully assembled race-use performance engine that
is built by Harley-Davidson. The 120 cubic inch engine produces an awesome 135 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque at the rear
wheel. The DB class is reserved for ’99-later Touring models equipped with the 120R engine and features rules that limit the modifications
to ensure low entry cost and a high level of competition. For more information and complete class rules, visit ahdra.com."
