Every time mine went bad it would grind only when the engine was hot. Mostly at gas stations. It would grind then bang it would start. Also this was the same symptom for a corroded solenoid but i just filed the contact plate to fix the solenoid. Basically the starter clutch is a one way bearing so when the engine starts the force from the engine doesn't damage the starter.

The starter clutch is to the left of item 29:

The 3 depressions in the outer cover of the comp that you mentioned in the vid are there to hold the springs in when you take it off. They're normal.

From what I could see, everything looked OK.

Kinda hard to explain but its like a flat roller bearing but the rollers are hour glass shaped that only allows it to only go one way. Its actually a sprag clutch like in a automatic transmission. Ill try to find a link that explains it better. You can test it in a vise with some channel locks once you pull it out of the starter.

The third link is the best explanation.

I have pictures in an album on my Profile page of the clutch dissambled. You really can't see any thing wrong with it. The rollers are round and on a ramp that causes them to lock on the shaft. You would need to mic the bearing and shaft diameters to see what was worn but you would also have to know what they should be. I did not want to pull my new clutch apart to measure it. I would have bet a paycheck there would have been galling somewhere with the noise it makes. I came to the opinion you are hearing the sound of hardened parts slipping under some pretty high loads. I could not turn the old clutch in a vice when I stood on it hard but the new one works great and my compensator does not bang any more.
If you have the grind replace the clutch. It's easy.

Can I just pull the starter from the right side of the bike and then remove starter clutch or am I going to have to take compensator and the rest of the primary apart to get to it ?

SE Comps only good for 07 and above. Sorry. Hope other suggestions work for you.

You have to pull the outer primary for one stupid bolt then you can pull the starter. Leave the comp and clutch alone. In 07+ you can just pull the starter without pulling the outer primary cover.
