Hello all, newbie here. I have been reading posts here for sometime and now it's time for me to get some input on a problem I'm having. I have a 2008 RKC and took on an ape install myself. I followed the valuable posts on here and have completed it with ease. The only problem is that my left turn blinker blows a fuse every time I press the button on the controls (bike does have factory security system and the fuse doesn't blow when the blinkers flash). I removed the clutch side control and removed the wiring to check for bare wires, nothing there. I feel like I have double checked all of my work but can't find anything that would cause this.
when the clutch side is removed, do the left side signals work?
This is almost certainly a short circuit, and you are probably going to have to see where the insulation is cut, a stray wire inside a connector, or somewhere.
Did you run the cables inside the bars? Sometimes there is some sharp slag from the welds in there that can cut wires when they are being pulled through.
yes, the wires are internal. and, no the blinker doesn't work with the controls removed. think i need to removed the wires from the bars and get the blinker working, then re-install them in the bars with more wrap on them. at least its the clutch side, much easier to work with than the throttle side. also noticed no horn. should that only work with the bike running?
I am wondering if you deburred the hole before running the wires? You may have snagged the wire while running them trough and now you cut the insulation causing the short
You guys nailed it on the head! This morning I removed the clutch side controls and dismantled the deutsch connectors. After taping all those wires up I threaded them back through the bars. I then removed all of the elec. tape binding the wires together. When I put the connector back together, plugged it in...... it all worked fine!! So I'm going to take my controls to work with me tonight and cover all the wires in shrink tubing instead of electrical tape. I think that might give a more durable protective cover. In the morning I will de-burr the holes in the bar and put her back together. Thanks for everyone's input.
