Fast Idle 2008 RKC
I have a new to me 2008 Road King Classic.
She is definitely idling fast. I have not put a computer on it but by ear it sounds like near 2k. If I roll the throttle forward, she backs down to what sounds like around around 1k. When I let go of the throttle, she jumps back up.
I assume this is a cable adjustment. Can someone advise on the procedure to remedy this?
Thanks.
Dave.
there can be a problem with using the "kill" switch on the handlebars to stop the motor, this can make the ECU think that the throttle is partially open, when it is closed.
There is a reset procedure which is to turn the ignition switch on/ off 4 times waiting about 10 seconds between cycles.
proper function will still have the motor idling quite high, mine idles at about 1300 rpm's at a cold start
which seems high, but at least I know the motor is getting full oil volume and pressure.
The evos idled at 800-1100, My Pan idles about 800.
The hard part for me is getting used to using the ignition switch rather than the kill.

Mine idles at 1100rpms cold and about 1k rpms warm.
I think 1k rpms warm idle is still high. It should be about 9-950 ideally for sound and twin cam required oiling.
Just for the flip-side of things -- All the '08's had that issue. If you shut the bike down with the RPM's up at all, it "remembered" that and idled high. The quick-fix as explained -- Turn "ON" (don't start) long enough for the radio to kick in, turn "OFF" long enough for the security lights to blink (assuming it has 'em), repeat 4 times.
You might consider staying with that as a couple buddies had that flash and their throttle response seemed -- odd (for lack of a better term). I'd ride their's, they'd ride mine, we all agreed, at least in these couple cases, that the upgrade was playing games with something.
Simple enough to avoid just by turning the switch with your right hand (you can't give it throttle if your hand isn't on it).
Congrats on the new ride, by the way...
