Here's a pic of my setup this winter, in the basement; a lot less harsh on the batteries than sitting out in the deep freeze garage. I use a plastic tray just in case; don't want acid on the countertop. I rotate the two maintenance chargers every few days, they seem to stay charged up pretty well. I have quick disconnect leads that can be hooked up to the battery in the bike, probably will install them when I put the battery back in the Sportster, not the easiest to remove and install with the barely long enough wires on the bike. This is my first season with the maintenance chargers, used a conventional charger previous years (with a noisy fan); these are more convenient, and silent. I'm a believer in surge protectors; my brother had everything unprotected fry in his house, even the refridgerator, dishwasher, and garage door opener. The only things plugged in that survived were his surge protected computer stuff and tv. If anyone has a better idea, post it (or sees something wrong that I'm doing, I can take criticism).

I have two Deltran Battery Tender Jr. One on each bike. You can pick them up on line often as
Cheap as $17 but I found that with shipping it will total about $23 - check amazon. They come with everything you need, including clips if your battery is out of you bike. The nice thing about the Jr is that the whole unit just plugs into the wall (or ext cord) so there is no extra charging box. I love these things.

Go to Walmart, buy the Schumacher XM1-5 Maintainer. It's 20 bucks, comes with the pig-tail for connection to your battery terminals, and is all you need to keep the battery topped-off. Schumacher Electric is a top shelf battery charger manufacturer and has been around for decades making good equipment at a reasonable price.

or get it at Amazon:

Does anyone know why the Battery Tender version has the fuse link? The Tender is protected, and of course there are no fuses in the alligator clip set up? I can make my own for $ .50 so why a fuse in line?

I think it depends on the manufacturer and the age of the unit.

I've bought a number of battery maintainers over the years and the early ones did not even have a fuse on the pigtail. The newer ones have fuses on the pigtails and on the alligator clamp set.

Take a look at the pictures on the Battery Tender(r) web site shown below. They show fuses on the alligator clips wires.
