Don't get excited when you hear it fire up at first it will make all kinds of noise at first till the lifters pump up with oil. Scared the crap out of me the first time I did it. Thought I screwed something up for sure. LOL

Second that ! I thought I had something out of time lol!
Couldn't you leave the spark plugs out and let the engine crank over to build up oil pressure in the lifters prior to letting it start? I'm asking as Im getting ready to do cams....

Done that when I done the SE upgrade on my RG, but still clattered until the lifter pumped up fully.

It is OK to spin the motor, sans plugs (ground the plugs), briefly just to make sure everything is spinning freely, no weird noises and to prime the oil pump but you can spin forever with the starter and won't see any oil up top. Moving pistons/rings up an down in a "dry" cylinder is not a good idea. Just spin briefly two or three times. put the plugs in and fire it up. Pushrods will clatter for a minute or so until the lifters pump up; not an issue.
