I have a 2001 Ultra Classic and I'm having problems with fuel milage. It only gets 29 mpg. I have been told it is suppose to get between 38 and 42 even with the stage 1 download, but it is loading up at start up and you can tell it is lugging on hills. It has the magnitta marellie intake. They tell me this is a poor design and wondering what can I do.
Most of the problems with the MM were idle based. The idle would start going up or in fewer cases, down. If you are getting 29 mpg, you have some sort of issue though. The only time I got 29 mpg on my '01 was when i was cruising across Montana at 90 mph+. Have you pulled the plugs and checked to see if it is running really rich?
the magnetti marelli can be problematic- I'd suggest you call around to see who in yur area is good at working on this system and can diagnose problem rather than just replace parts ( which is expensive for you, and may not fix anything).
the tech needs to be able to determine if the EFO programming is correct too.
MPG should be over 40 cruising at 65.
you can look at your spark plugs, but it won't tell you anything about the problem---if they are sooty ( rich) looking at the plug doesn't tell you whether it is rich at 1000, 3000 or 5000 rpm
