looking for an electra glide
but now the good news, ive seen the light! The first time i got on a harley i was sold! The wife and i would like to get something we can cruise and take trips on, weve decided we want an electra glide. Problem is being a crotch rocket guy i dont know much about harleys, if someone wouldnt mind pointing me in the direction of some reading about electra glides? Specifically i want to know what year they started having fuel injection, different size motors they came with and how to tell which one a bike has, etc etc etc. Thanks guys ahead of time for any info any is apreciated! I cant wait to get into the harley world head first and actually enjoy taking trips on my bike for once, oh and taking more than my wallet with me sure will be a plus!!! haha -******
many of us have or had import bikes... I've had a bunch and still have a '74 Z1A.
H-D touring model bikes of the same year will have same drivetrain, frame suspension etc. ( there are also model series based on the softail frame, the dyna frame, the sportster frame and the vrod frame)
the difference between touring models is the fiberglass hanging on them, or not.
that means the road king and the road glide ( of the same year) are the same bike, once you peel the plastic off.
there are differences in seats, windshields, chrome, cosmetics, wheels and badges
the electraglide is the one with the traditional "batwing fairing"
and comes in different versions:
FLHT Standard ( until 09) no radio, stripped down
FLHTP cop bike like a white standard, usually has "interesting electrical issues, with the cop stuff stripped off)
FLHX streetglide, like a standard with custom touches and radio, lowered 1" in the rear ( short shocks)
FLHTC classic has the tourpak added ( *** this I think the value leader- for my needs anyway)
FLHTCU ultra has tourpak, rear speakers, lower fairings, CB radio and intercom
FLHTK Limited- all the above but some cool cosmetics and for 2010 and 2011 had the 103" while the other models were 96"
so those are the models.
changes with harleys are incremental, they rarely change more than 1 thing a year so it is best to zero in on your budget and shop from there.
you will find motors in 88, 95 ( bored version of the 88) , 96 ( stroked) and 103" ( bored version of the 96") sizes, 5 and 6 speed trannys, and the current frame was introduced for 2009. ( CVO models may have 110" motors)
carbs were offered on lower end models to 2006, injection has been through a couple of versions- the version post 2007 is probably the best- the pre 2002 was a nightmare for some
my first day on a Harley touring bike was 500 miles, the second was 800 miles--- thats what you are in for...
enjoy.
