Default What is SERT anyway?

I gather SERT has something to do with mapping the fuel injection. What exactly is it and why do so many speak highly of it? My new Street Glide arrives in the spring, so I need to get up on this terminology. I'll probably go with a Screaming Eagle air cleaner and HD slip-on mufflers (Stage 1) - so do I need SERT too?

Screamin Eagle Race Tuner

I would get that or a Powercommander III, but it is not necessary if you have a stage one download. It corrects fuel/air mixture with maps that are loaded in. I prefer the PCIII, but other have the SERT

SERT = Screamin Eagle Race Tuner
This is used to reprogram your exsisting ECM, just a coupler to the unit, it does not stay on the bike like some of the other "piggy back" systems (PCIII ect) You can even play with it your self if you have a laptop. Enjoy your new bike..ride safe

From what I have read so far, the SERT is what you need if you really want to dial in the EFI on your Harley after you have modified the intake/exhaust. It sounds like when you buy it, it stays with the bike, so to speak. While the average Joe can use his laptop to play with it, for the most part it seems like the dealer will do the tuning, using the owner's SERT. I guess the advantage is that you will always have the SERT, so if you do more advanced engine modifications later, you can use the SERT to dial it in again.

Is that about it?

SERT allows you to change the ECM. Once the ECM is changed it cannot go back to stock configuration (that, at least is my understanding). The PCIII, will allow you to fine tune air/fule mixture without changing the ECM (I have a PCIII). That is something to consider in case you may ever want to revert your bike to stock condition.
