Thumbs down slip-ons

I am doing a build on my 2009 FLTR. It will consist of a 103" bore, ported heads, Andrews 54G gear drive cams, V&H Power Duals, and PC V. My only other decision lies with mufflers.

I had decided on V&H Monster Ovals for the tone. The shop is not too excited because they say they are restrictive (and expensive). They are also as quiet as stock.

I like long mile rides, listen to the stereo, don't want too loud to where I'm waking up Barney Fife in some quiet burg.

I am considering Super Trapp Stout or Super Trapp Kerker Stout. Does anyone have hands on experience who can comment?

I have Vance & Hines Monster ovals and True duals setup now for two years on my 09 Ultra Classic. They are louder than stock but not all that loud...more mellow than loud. Also, I have Hog Tunes front and rear. I can hear my radio\Cd up to around 70 mph, after that, it isn't as clear. It also depends on your helmet...full, half, etc. If your ears are exposed, then you will hear much better than if your ears are covered. Some have commented Ovals are not loud enough while others complain they are too loud on long trips. Hard to say what your opinion will be as it is such a personal preference and perception on pipes. Overall, the ovals is a good choice but again, it's a personal choice. So, if you want really loud pipes, Ovals won't do the trick, but if you want mellow ovals is one of many other choices. I purchased my Ovals on eBay for a bit cheaper than retail. Everyone has their own opinions on this subject.

With the 103" build, CAM and Tuner, plus I'm assuming a SE Stage 1 Air kit, I don't thing you really need the Monster Ovals. I'm not buying into your shop telling you that the Monster Ovals are too restrictive.

I basically have the same build as you along with running the V & H Power Duals. I have the V & H standard slipon Ovals and they are great. Plenty of good exhaust note without the need to blast the stereo.

I see you live in AZ. Don't know if they are still doing any bike nights out there but if so I seriously suggest you go to them, find some bikes running the Monster Ovals and other pipes you're interest in and ask them their opinions and also ask them to fire up their bikes. Like everyone has said, exhaust note is a matter of personal preference but do your research before you buy and if need be check out this Forums Parts for Sale thread and ebay and craigs list.

I'm guessing they want to sell you a set of "their" pipes...?? What is the shop recommending? MO's are great pipes, but agree w/JJHOG on the need/expense...

Have the V&H tapered slash cut. They are on the low end of their pricing for V&H slip ons. I think they have a great sounding deep rumble as well as not too loud but not quiet when revving the motor. I'm pleased for the price

I've been through a few seta of slip ons and now using a super trap supermeg.the tunable disc and end caps rock, open and loud or closed up and quiet it still flows well.

Here's a video I did of my setup.
Dresser Duals and Monster Ovals.
They are pretty quite at idle but will light up if you want them too.

My pal stores his 2011 imited with me for the winters, i ride it alot and we ride together thousands of miles each year.

he has the monster ovals and the v&h header with X pipe ( the cover of which hits on rt turns on his lowered bike)- I find them too loud when riding his bike, if he is leading a drop way back- the tinny sound projecting straight back I find annoying.

( these are my impressions only).

I use supertrapps ( and have for over 20 years on a number of bikes).

I can contour the sound and tune the exhaust to the motor.

the supertrapp design allows high flow with good control of the gasses and sound control, the solid end cap prevents the high tinny stuff from shooting straight back.

the S/E nightstick and fatshots are made by and very similar to the supertrapp supermegs.
A quick disc/end cap swap makes them a good bargain choice as they are available on the secondary market- I paid $200 for a take off set of nightsticks and tuned them for my 09.
