I spent 6 years riding BMW's and those bikes are truly dangerous as far as their kick stands. I had two of them (K12LT & R1100RT) that actually would idle them selves off the side stand. After a bit I realized that you never start a beemer and let it sit on the stand on flat or a slight downhill grade.
I have had several bagger Harleys and never had a problem with any of them as to the sidestands.
Have someone else sit on your bike or thiers for that matter and actually run it thru its cycle and you will not only understand how it works, you will loose the pucker factor. Good design and tough as nails.

Yes the jiffy stand locks and holds.....not to worry.
I cannot think of any scenerio when I would ever park and leave my bike in neutral, (some mentioned above that they do).
That's just askin for trouble whether you're confident with the stand or not.
I would never leave my bike in neutral even parked in my own garage.

Yeah, I think the issue is idling while warming up
Had you or anybody else ever put heat on it? Thats some pretty tough steel and as long as you heat treat it right after heating to bend it should stay tough. I think if I had one break I would have lost confidence in the jumping I have done on them. Especially in those days where there was almost always a crowd around to watch you bust your azz. Maybe they were not as tough on the PH or the heat treat wasn't right.
I bought the bike used. It was well used. The Jiffy stand didn't look like it was ever heated.
My bike would start on the third kick when it was cold. Warmed up it would start on the first kick. I always used the spark retard.
Yeah..this was a lot of "mini heart attacks" to me initially lol...and still is sometimes when a buddy shouts, "it's rolling forward!!!!" Well...so far so good...no probs and this post has reassured me for the upcoming riding season!
The Jiffy Stand locks when there is weight on it. If you drive away with the stand down relax it won't dig in but will fold up into place. Ask me how I know. Just make sure when you put the stand on that it is extended right out.
I just found that out tonight. I took off and heard the drag and pop back into place. I thought I broke something but it looked ok. I also find it odd that there's isn't a safety shut off device on our Harleys. My Yamaha V Star would shut off if I put it in gear with the kick stand down. It also wouldn't start if it were in gear with the kick stand down.
Ok cool it has me spooked maybe i'll get use to it lol When it creeps forward a little makes my starfish pucker LOL And i always put it in neutral when i am done riding, old habits...Saw a few people start there bikes in gear and dump em on there side...
The jiffy stand is not gonna fail, and your bike is not going to start in gear unless you squeeze the clutch lever ... no matter how hard you push the start button.
