Default '05 Road King with a cracked header pipe

My newly acquired 2005 RK has a cracked rear header pipe. The dealership said they will replace the OEM pipe or credit me with the cost of the OEM pipe if I choose to pick out different header pipes.

So, options we have discussed so far are to replace the OEM header pipes with V&H or to replace with Khrome Werks (or Hard Krome ... I old ... I forgot what they told me). The dealer suggested the Khrome Werks header pipes as they help reduce the heat issue ...

I do not want to sacrifice sound or power ... What are your thoughts? Other options I should consider?

I apologize if my post is redundant ... I've tried searching, but, could not find threads that seemed to address my specific question ... looking for ideas or direction to threads detailing ideas ...

Thanks!

Appears you have a good set of slip ons: if it were me I would have them replace with a stock head pipe with no $ output and say thank you and ride. If you feel the need to spend $, go with true duals and a Stage 1 AC.

Yes, I've thought of that, however, I understand the stock system results in a heat issue for the rider/passenger. I don't have enough miles on this bike to know, however, if it is the problem that I've read about, I would like to address it now.

The previous owner did have an after-market intake installed when he did the SE 95 upgrade. The bike runs strong and dyno's at 98.7 Ft-Lbs of torque and 88.1 HP. I really am only out to solve the heat problem (if it is a problem) and of course replace the cracked pipe.

Thanks!

How about a full sac system. It will replace the part that cracks all the time and I love the sound now that its a true dual setup.

I went with the V&H Tru duals when I did a 95 kit. Go for stereo sound.

Yes, I am leaning towards a true dual system. Still debating the heat issue and how best to resolve.

True Dual headers will be louder with the same slipons as compared to the stock headers. The heat issue will improve on the right side. My experience was a loss of low end torque when I went with true duals but I did not retune for the different exhaust. A better tune surely would have given me better results.

What heat problem? Did you ride it long enough to notice a problem? I have an '07 which is when everyone says the heat problem started and I am not bothered by it in hot old Texas.

The stock headpipe is more efficient than the true duals so I agree with checkers' earlier post to go with having the dealer replace the header with a new one unless you want to spend some money and have a change from what you have. I had the rear header crack on my bike and I changed to a 2-1 Thunderheader and that was $600+ out of my pocket. Was it worth it? Probably not.

Check out the MGS True Duals. Head pipes separately available soon as well.
