+1 on lacquer thinner or gasoline - comes right off. WD40 will do in a pinch also (it's the solvent in the spray).
BIG no-no on steel wool unless you really like the 'lot's of hairline scratches' look.

I've used real fine steel wool and it worked fine.

Guys, Thanks for the responce.I'll give them a try and let you know how I make out..Road tar is a pain in the *** to get off chrome..

NO steel wool.

Steel wool is a newbie mistake, and belongs nowhere near a bike--- I've seen more finishes ruined by steel wool used on motors, wheels etc.

If you use a mechanical technique (such as scraping), you want a material harder than the tar, softer than the chrome.

I use a cloth and gas/lighter fluid as pointed out before.

plastic/nylon scraper ( incl. guitar picks) will also work if thick enough to get under it.

I was waiting for someone to "nix" the steel wool idea .... NOT A GOOD CHOICE .... WD40 usually does a good job .... soak it a minute and it softens the tar .... also a good Chrome Cleaner followed by a Chrome polish will usually bring back the shine and luster to the chrome.
