well i took in shop tuesday...said if comprnsator...upgrade to SE...... got a call today...claiming compensator is fine....
said it is started clutch...they ordered one...may take a week to come in.... does that loud clanking and starter stopping sound like starter clutch or compensator ?
If you get the occassional clank, whiz, bang sound when do a hot start on late model bikes, try the following for an easy remedy: Crack the throttle ever so slightly as you crank the bike. It is usually a lean fuel situation that causes the bike to make this sound when it is hot. I know, I know, I can hear the laughing in the background already. Just try it next time you restart when the engine is hot. The SE compensator replacement does help because it is better engineered. Lots of people just relearn the starting procedure and that save money. You really don't care if your Harley dealers 4 kids get an Ivy League education, do you?

I started doing this last year, does help sometimes. Also I've found it doesn't happen as much if I crank it as soon as I turn the ignition on. If I let the fuel pump run and crank after it kicks off, it's twice as bad. Mine also sounds like the clang and grinding noises but to add to it sometimes sounds like it's backfiring through the intake. Just like the OP's, it seems to do it when it's hot/warm. First start of the day is usually fine, but it's all down hill from there. Almost sounds like the damn starters gonna smash something.
This is my first Harley so I thought it was just normal. I've messed with my maps for my PCIII with little effect. Any other ideas??

that's sounds just what mine was doing...i took to shop few weeks ago....they replaced starter clutch under extended warranty....so far working fine
Took it to the dealer this afternoon. Luckily it did it right in front of the tech. He said it definitely needs a starter clutch. I explained to him how I've read a bunch of different places that claim it's a bad compensator that causes the clutch to go bad, he said it's a wear item and didn't think it was gonna be a problem, but he'd look into it. Bikes scheduled to go in for the work on the 30th. Luckily warranty will cover it all. I told him if the compensator did end up needing to be replaced I'd throw in the extra $100 to go with the SE upgrade. Guess I'll hafta wait and see.
