Default outer fairing problem

I can't get the screw back into the brass fitting into the outer fairing...turns out it is stripped at the first few threads...i went to the local stealer today and got a new brass fitting...problem is, how do i get the old one out and how do i secure the new one in....perhaps use some glue...

I've not had that problem but I have talked to the service manager at my dealership about this in the past. He tells me this is a common problem and HD makes a repair kit for it.

I'd suggest asking them what's the best way to handle this.

I would get a tap and clean up the threads very carefully

Yep, first step after screwing up any thread is to get out the tap and die set!

To put the new insert in just put the screw in the insert all the way and screw it in. The slotted end is what cuts its way in. Just make sure it goes in straight.

Ran into the same problem the last time I had the outter fairing off, as others have said, retap the threads, 1/4 x 20 as I recall.

Once you get new threads in the old insert, put one washer on the screw so the head won't pull thru. Add more washers that are big enough so the old insert will fit thru the washer hole but won't skip over the first washer. Put enough washers on so only a few threads catch and then start turning the screw in. The insert will pull out. I've done 3 like this with no problems.
