Default just a thought about oil

reading all the info i can about reusable oil filters (K&P,Pcracing, FLO)
and I wonder if the "higher flow rate" of oil through them might just be the answer to the tickity top end noise we all have on our 96's and 103's. whatcha think? Little better oil preasure...Little more flow...Lifters taking up slack better...less noise???

good question....doubtful if it would make a difference....the tic from the top end (at least on my bike) is the valves themselves opening and closing, not play in the valve train....

I doubt it. Here's my thinking...

The oil pressure is limited by the relief valve. Without changing the force of the relief valve spring the oil pressure will not be any greater. As for the increased flowrate through the filter, if anything that would lower the oil pressure, although that is largely dependent on the oil pump's volume capacity and other restrictions in the oiling system. Finally, and I think this is the clincher, once the lifters are pumped up they require adequate pressure, but do not require that much volume, to keep them pumped up.

These are only my thoughts and I'm not professing them to be fact. If you see it differently I can't argue with your theories, I can only listen and assess.

for historical context:

the top end on my 53 FL is almost as noisy as the stock exhaust.

the pans do have the felts and the lifters are hydraulic.

I think if you sit on top of a motor, it's going to be noisy, and hot too.

had the ticky ticky problem, tried all theories and none really worked. during a recent engine rebuild, found all four push rods bent.....bent push rod is a shorter push rod....shorter push rod is a system with a gap...so until the lifters pressurize and fully close the gap....i get ticky ticky.

I would not associate oil quality with the characteristic sound of well adjusted valves because the condition of their sealing surface produces the sound that changes in case of a combustion issue (dirty valves are usually silent valves).

IMO at the level of the valves we can hear two different sounds:
- One coming from the play of the rocker arms and
- One from the valves as they land or 'start to touch' their seats
The hydraulic lash compensation dampens the rocker noise but clean and straight valves should always sound like cymbals when seats are properly machined (not skewed).

This is my first Harley, first fuel injected bike and again I can simply rely on my ears to evaluate load and temperature of the engine. I couldn't live without the oil pressure gauge and battery charge indicator though...

I think if I were going to consider a better flowing oil filter, I would also include a higher volume oil pump.

Ohhhh, you should have said that from the get-go...yes, yes,YES...it will make a huge difference in the longivity of the motor which in turn eases the life of the trans...all the way to the tires lasting longer...and they are good for the environment, I have even heard cases where if you can get your girl to polish it just right you can cut back on the viagra....I would definitely buy it ...if for no other reason than to help your woman to be happier in the bed...
