I ride 45-50 MPH at 2500 RPM in 5th gear, and shift to 6th gear any speed higher than 55 MPH.
I believe that riding at high RPM will abuse the bike, as I get up to 85-90 MPH with 3500 RPM, and I never rev or need to get up to 4000 RPM, as 90 MPH is way too fast for me.
it might be abuse if you constantly run over 5500 rpm in every gear, but imo, you're abusing your bike riding it the way you do. you might have 30k on it now, but will be interesting to see if you make it to 60k or better before you blow out your crank.....
1. Normal valve train noise. I usually hear it from about 2100-2400 rpm.
2. I try to keep mine running between 2800-3200 rpm. The engine seems happiest there and there is no pinging or clattering.
3. Don't know about that one without more information.

So, what are everyones thoughts?? Now that I've changed the oil (which I did last night at 520 miles) and now have about 560 on it, do you think I can open it up a bit and see what it can do or should I just hold on until after the 1000 mile service? I have been well within spec for the initial 500 mile break in but want to "experiment" a little with my new power. I certainly don't plan on red lining it in every gear but am wanting to put it through it's paces a couple of time. I don't ride that way all the time so I don't want people to think I'm an abuser but I like to know what I have under me if I should ever need it. If the majority of responses are to wait I have the willpower to do that without trouble.
Also, I really appreciate everyones responses to date. It's nice to know you'd welcome me into the fold so easily. I'll admit I was a little worried about the "Harley Guys" welcoming me that quickly but I've had a nice start to what I plan to be a long lasting relationship with this forum.

You won't hurt anything if you accel up the rev band a bit and let it come back to cruise. I suggest you do this in defferent gears from time to time until the 1k service then you can let it off the chain a bit more. You won't hurt anything!
I broke my 09 in by moderately hard accel then decel in second gear then same in third gear a few times to seat the rings well. I basically (sort of) followed the manual for break in after the initial ring seat.
I also changed the motor oil at 100 kms, then 500 kms, than all fluids change at the 1000 mile service. Just my way to do it but I'm sure it wasn't really necessary-- I just have a lot of stock of oil on hand!

You can certainly "put it through its paces" w/o harm at this point. Don't be bumping the rev limiter, but some brisk acceleration shifting at 4000 rpm should be fine. We replace our police bikes every 3 years or so, and ride them like "normal" right from the get go, no special concerns or limitations after the first 2-300 miles. Normal for a police bike calls for a lot more stressful conditions than the average civilain bike will ever see. We've never had any issues, although I'm sure some will say that long term reliability might be affected. Our bikes generally get auctioned off at 30k miles or so, but those miles are almost entirely CITY/URBAN miles, certainly the equivalent of 50,000+ highway miles in civilian use. Rarely do we have internal engine problems, so my experience has been just ride it the way you normally would.
