Unhappy Oil Temp Gauge not working?

In trying to keep my mill cool, I installed an HD oil cooler soon after buying my Ultra. I added an oil temp gauge with the sender in the pan. 20K ago I had a 95" kit installed. Last fall, I followed up with a Baker +1 oil pan.
Before this, average op temp was at the 180 mark with occasional peaks at 220 on really hot days, especially with stop and go traffice or hard/extended high speed runs.
So when they were installing the baker pan, they said there were two problems - 1) the harness plug broke apart when they were taking it off the sender and 2) with the new pan installed the combined length of sender and harness plug were too long to be in the original position and interfered with the engine case ahead of the pan.
$50 later an new harness was soldered onto the old harness with a new plug. The sender was reinstalled using a 90 degree elbow. But the temps never got above 110.
I thought possibly the elbow was not allowing enough oil to circulate into it to the sender and reinstalled it directly into the drain plug hole. Still no change. Now that it is warmer weather and I've taken some extended rides, its still not registering above about 130.
I know I installed the +1 pan but its not keeping it THAT cool. I can tell that from the heat on my leg!
I put it on to be a functional informative engine "status" help - but right now its just an annoyance.
So now what? Did the sender go bad too? Is the solderin job adding too much resistance?

Default

looks like the sender/wiring wasn't fixed properly.

Cool

I guess I could pull out the sender, boil some water, drop it in and see if it registers. If not, pull the wiring harness down to the soldered area and see if there is an issue there or try to attach the wires directly to the pins on the sender (TINY PINS!) and see what happens then. UGH.
