ca route 177 this past weekend. cruising along at 80. came upon this sign. construction guy sitting next to it. waited for the "pilot vehicle" and state police cruiser for 20 minutes. followed the pilot vehicle. after about 4 miles we passed 2 construction trucks. 3 guys were sweeping something in the middle of the right (eastbound) lane. followed the pilot vehicle for another 3-4 miles, nothing. nada. then back to 2 lanes.
maybe they just swept up a bunch of nails that fell off a truck...
you never know.
or wet paint- one of the best I ever saw was a guy pulled out cause he wasn't gonna be held up anymore and blasted past the hiway truck--- turns out they were striping and he painted up the sides of his truck pretty good.

What about a nasty chemical spill or radioprotection incident?
Both types of contaminents travel by road and are invisible to the human eye
You have to know what you're doing when not observing a safety sign.
It is a kewl photo though I have to say. I am always amused / amazed by the response to mootrway accidents in various countries. In the UK they literally shut the place down for hours, pop across to Italy and they just push the vehicles to one side and it is business as usual (and by UK standards Italian "usual" is already hectic) with the emergency services and involved people all hanging around on the hard shoulder...
Not saying either approach is right or wrong, just amused by the difference

Trust me, it would not be your typical DOT highway worker "sweeping" it up.....
