I'd start with the center screw by just threading it enough so it won't fall out. Then align one of the sides and start threading it in but leave it loose - move on to the next one. Then alternately tighten all three.

Hey neighbor!! Funny you mention this as I just had my outer fairing off this evening!! Just barely tighten each one as you go - make sure each one is good, then tighten... Might need to give the fairing a nudge as you go!!

Loosen the 4 screws in the inner fairing & usually the outer fairing will drop down.

Two screws are lower & outside the speakers and the other two are right above the lower triple tree.. kinda a PIA.

I always leave 'em all (7) loose until they're all in. And +1 on doing the center one 1st, then the outers, with the 4 bottoms still loose. Then, tighten all - gently.

I swap windscreens alot.

I enlarge the 3 "keyholes" with a rotozip, to more of an inverted U shape.

that allows a slight loosening of the 3 screws and a quick swap.

the windscreen will just pull straight up and out

less wear and tear on the faring screws.

I'd be worried about the shield working its way loose and flying off at speed when enlarging the keyholes.

Even with the stock keyholes on my shield (National Cycle V-Stream) mine slides out of position from time to time and I have the screws tightened much tighter than I like them. I know I'm going to strip the insert out of the plastic one of these days, but I have no choice if I want the windshield to stay put.

nope, never been a problem at all- thousands of miles.

even when swapping the black tape "grows" a little onto the windscreen and I have to work it loose.

like most, there is a wear line on the windscreen, which i would see if the windscreen were coming up.

I use use stock H-D take off windscreens and cut them to desired height with a rotozip, they usually cost about $30.

i wonder if the aftermarket National windscreen above is thinner material, so that the fairing doesn't clamp it before the screws bottom out?

Nope. It's actually approximately 50% thicker than a stock shield.
