Default GPS Garmin Nuvi Question

Ok here is what I got going on. Have a 07 ultra with the power port in the truck. Making a GPS mount for my windshield/dash. My old Tom TOM would charge and run off of a mini usb port. I was planning on running a long usb to mini usb cable from truck to and up through the fairing to plug in the Nuvi 50 when in use. But have found that when I plug the usb cable into the cig adapter with dual usb ports into the truck and into the Garmin it puts it into computer mode and will not charge or work. I do not want to use the cig adapter on the fairing, want the wiring in the truck or elsewhere.

Any Ideas!

Call the guy at http://www.3brpowersports.com, I bought a cable from them that plugs into the accessory port under the seat, and it has a standard USB connector on the other end. I ran that under my console. From there, they sell you a USB to Mini-USB, and its a power-only USB cable so it wont go into connect mode, it will just power your device.

Here's the write up that I did on my Road King:

I bought this:

http://www.jpcycles.com/product/362-...1&zmap=362-061

and wired it to the battery. I comes with a 7.5a fuse block in the harness (includes the fuse) and terminals to hook to the battery. I ran the wiring under the tank and up the back of the nacelle and mounted the plug on the bars. They also sell a short cable for the NUVI that is long enough to reach, but short enough to prevent a bird's nest of excess wire. I used a RAM mount for my NUVI 1450. All in all, a very clean install that powers my GPS, and charges my cell phone.

I will try to get some pics posted in the next day or two.

That item at J&P is the 3br product... it looks good, we just ordered one for testing ourselves (even though we offer other power products). If you're looking for a mount for a GPS or phone (or other gadget for that matter), check these out (made in USA):http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/

Some of the Garmin's are flaky.
I had one model that came with a cradle to use, if you connected to USB ( not the cradle ) the screen would go 50% brightness ( and couldn't change it ). I thought it was defective so I called them. After hours on the phone they told me that model did that.. I ended up getting another model that did..

As for the mini-usb, I bought the Garmin barewire cable. connected it to the back side of the cigarette lighter plug on the inside of the fairing. Works great with my new Garmin.

Mine does the same thing but after a while it figures it self out that its not computer connection and start navigating again.Have had those moments when you need it fast and it seems like take for ever for it get out of that computer mode its not very smart GPS but it was cheap and I'm ok with the performance.

2 types of usb cables for Garmins. Data Cable & Power Cable. Computers have power supply incorporated in the onboard usb slot so they can supply power and read data. Better idea is to get a power adaptor and do away with the usb set-up altogether for less then $20.00, about the same price as having to purchase an additional usb power cable.
