I have a 97 RK and I plan to put either 12 or 16 inch Ape Hangers on at the end of the month...I am now doing some research and was wondering if I need to change my riser(s) and/or riser bushings? Also, I would appreciate any other opinions, tips, or advice on the purchase of apes, cables, wiring, etc. Thanks in advance for great advice which I always get from the forum.[sm=thanx.gif]
If you put on 1 1/4" bars, you cannot use the plastic (polyurethane) bushings. They raise the risers just enough that the bars will not fit beneath the Road King shroud. The stock risers are fine. I actually had to machine off 3/16" on the risers even with the rubber bushings. You will want to install the one-piece clamp in place of the separate clamps. Particularly the part at the end that says "IMPORTANT"applies to 1 1/4" apes, too. If you are putting your wires inside the bar, you will have to extend your wiring, I suggest soldering the connections instead of using crimp or plug connectors. Also, don't forget to stagger your conections so you will not have a lump in one spot. You will have to pull those wires through the bars.
The Wild 1 bars are great. Their customer service is great. The best prices for Wild 1 bars are at Wally's http://www.wallyscycleworld.com/index.aspand their customer service is great, too. There are a lot of good pics on their site of Road Kings with different bars and all sizes of apes. http://www.wild1inc.com/handlebars.html
I have the WO515 10" apes and would probably go higher if I was doing it again.
Mine are 12 1/2"Physco Chubbys by Wild 1 Mfg.and I love them.
Yes you should change out your bushings while your in there for sure.
Like Longtimegone said check out there site. www.wild1inc.com
If I was to do it again I'd go with 16"
I put 16" on my 99 King, love them. I used 1" apes not chubs so bushings were no issue. I am 6 ft tall and if I had it to do over again I would go to 18". Wouldn't go less than 16" for my size.
