Default riders backrest

I somehow have lost the small spring that fits the riders backrest. This is the spring that puts tension on the two post the goes into the mounting bracket. The dealer says the only way to get another is to order another seat. I went to the local hardware store and bought several springs but after trying them none fit or worked as the original. Anyone out there have one or can offer some other suggestions as to what I can do would be appreciated..

Figure out what the dimensions are and order one.

Lots of choices, including a cut-to-fit.

Here is a link to the install instructions for a riders backrest. It shows a spring as a Service Part number 10406. It covers a half a dozen backrests but I am not sure if yours is one of them or it that is the same spring you need.

Your dealer is full of it. I don't have a part number, but I lost the same spring recently. I went to the dealer, explained the part I was looking for and they had it in stock. Go to another dealer, or check out the part number above and order online.

I worked in automotive parts for a few years. We don't know it all and learn something new every day.

Give them the part number and teach the parts person their daily lesson.

When you need a small part such as in this situation go to your HD dealer parts counter and ask the guy to do a "kit breakdown" on HD NET, he will give you a suprised look, but will know what you are talking about.

THis breakdown will show the individual parts that comprise your item in question and will show their availability as individual parts.

A very fair comment. Dealer/parts guy made an honest mistake. Help them help you and they'll happily get you the part you need.
