Default Is dealer taking for a ride?

2011, 103, EG UL; all stock except for 4" V&H slip-ons. Want to complete Stage 1. Planning on installing AC myself but am having dealer install power duels. Dealer says I need both a tuner and a dyno tune.

Now please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a "tuner" use maps to... well, trick your bike into delivering the correct fuel / mix? And a full dyno would actually change your existing OEM calibration? Why do I need both?

The tuner uses maps that are close and dyno tuning fine tunes a map to your bike. You can always return to stock.

you can get him to explain what and why he is doing- and ALOT of riders go that route.

and they ARE in the business to sell services ( and the service writer IS a commission position)- so that's what he is supposed to be doing.

I use xieds instead of a tuner, there is a current xieds thread running today, you can see why --- and the cost is about $130.

the stage 1 download from the dealer is a total waste of money...your bike will run as lean as ever. do a search on this forum for xied's. that is all you really need for stage 1.

So getting both is good?

Based on what I've read, they're giving me a good deal ($750 for power duels, tuner and dyno including labor and only one full day in shop).

tell them to make sure the clamp on the crossover is oriented so that the excess threaded bolt can't hit a speed bump and tear the exhaust system off of the bike.

if they can't rotate the clamp, then they should cut or grind off the excess

If you want the bike to run top notch then get a tuner and have it dynotuned. But beware, the tune will only be as good as the tuner and most of the time it's not at the dealership. A good dyno tuner doesn't use canned maps but designs one for your bike. (not one just like yours but yours)

XEID's work great for the money but only "trick" the ECM into more fuel. A lot of people are happy with their bike because they just don't know how good it can really run.

A quality tuner doesn't "trick" the ECM into doing anything. It reprograms it and it is in there for good without anything attached to it and does more then just adding fuel. It also adjust timing and runs different fuel mixtures depending on how your running your bike.

Talk to all the dyno shops in your area before you do anything.

a dyno tune is only as good as the tech doing the work in some cases a canned map will run better than a poor tune, and some bad techs are suspected of installing canned map(about 15 minutes of labor) and charging for dyno time.for me xeid was ok for just pipes but my bike still ran too lean with pipes and ac,pcv fuelmoto map and all is good.
