Im new to baggers so please bear with me. Why do people buy liners for their hardbags? Do they leak? Whats the deal? I plan on traveling with my laptop and other things that need to stay dry. Do I need liners?

Well with 800 plus posts you ain't no troll so..............It's to grab all of the contents of the hardbag on your way into the hotel, or wherever you are going to sack out for the night. Grab and go I guess. I have a pair but have yet to use them.
Oh, and your stuff inside will stay dry. No worries there.

Yep thats the main reason, its like luggage with a liner.
If your like me and have luggage then you wont need them. The crap in my bags, stays in my bags.
Liners are handy when you travel or have something you want to carry that doesn't need to be bouncing around in your hard bags. A laptop, tablet, or phone are good examples. They are also good for packing effectively for a trip since you pretty much have the exact dimensions of your hard bags. I don't use my liners for everyday around town riding... just on trips when packing is necessary.
Since my liners came with my bike, I'm not sure how much they cost. For my previously owned non-HD bagger, I went to Wal-mart and purchased 2 of those inexpensive soft-side briefcases for about $7 each. They work just like the liners and usually have smaller compartments for phones, pens, keys, maps, etc. Just mentioning this for another effective but inexpensive option.

Thanks guys! Excellent answers. I told you it was a dumb question.
I just traded my WG for the RK so I have never been on a trip yet. In fact, Tropical Storm Debby has been hammering us since 10 minutes after I got her in the garage on Saturday. I cant believe its Tuesday and I only have 2 miles on her. I dont mind riding in the rain but I would like to break in the new tires before I get on wet slick roads.
Thanks again everyone! More dumb bagger questions coming soon
