I just pull the lowers off and store them till Fall. The Cat in the head pipe is the culprit that causes the heat, along with the insanely lean fuel/air mixture they are making the bikes run and the fact that you have a 103" motor down there now instead of the 96" you had. My 07 Ultra used to get so hot at stop lights that it would actually burn the back of my thighs. I put an oil cooler on it, installed some heat shields under the saddle, started running Amsoil in all 3 holes, and pulled the lowers. Oil temp dropped about 20°. The 09 with the redesigned frame and re-routed "tuck-under" exhaust somewhat fixed the issue HD had with excessive heat. So then the MoCo leaned them out more and put a cat in the muffler, then deciding that the muffler is the first thing usually to go, put the cat in the head pipe.

As was suggested, I guess the fix is to put a new exhaust system (without the cats) on to let the motor "exhale" a little easier, maybe a new intake system to let it "inhale" better, and a fuel manager to help it digest all the air properly that it will get. Of course the fuel mileage will no doubt suffer as well.

I keep saying that the death bell is tolling for the venerable air-cooled V-twin motor. Like it or not, the MoCo will have to redesign with a liquid-cooled motor soon. More torque, more horsepower, increased reliability, better rider comfort (and I would imagine, at least initially, an insanely expensive price tag.)

Take off those lowers to start with, get some air moving down there, it will make a huge difference and will be way cooler. Oh - and its FREE.

Great time to get rid of the cat, V/H Power Duals was the ticket for me.
You are right, the heat is crazy on the right with the cat.

you'll notice when you have the vents open, that there is still a large portion of the door still in the way. some folks have taken a dremel to them, but i don't like to cut things up if i don't have to.

some folks, as you've no doubt noticed, take their lowers off completely. i like the airflow i get with the lowers on, so i just take the doors off. still get the improved airflow, but with not as much perceived heat.

Add a tuner to the stock setup will help some. Getting rid of the cat + a tuner will help more. Removing the lowers allows more air than removing the doors does. I used to remove my lowers for the summer. Since I removed the doors I run them all year long. A tad Cooler in winter in Missouri. No worries about that in Florida I imagine.
