Default Brake pads

I am not the original owner of my 02 Ultra, which just hit 30K. To be on the safe side I think it is a good idea to replace the brake pads. What are you guys using? Best place to get them?

I've been fine with stock oem style pads on most of my bikes- my FXR has EBC's which have been good.

pads are a compromise- hard pads last longer, but are more likely to squeal.

soft pads are less likely to squeal but wear faster and produce more dust.

the real key is proper install which includes expelling the dirty fluid through the bleeder, rather than pushing it up the lines when pushing the pistons in.

cleaning the dust off of the calipers

using an anti-squeak paste, lubing the pins

maybe chamfering the leading edge of the pad

inspecting the rotors for cracks, gouges etc

and maybe replacing the wheel bearings- since you are already there.

the quality of the work outweighs the choice of the pads

Mike

I am really impressed with Lyndall brake pads. doesn't squel but grabs like all get out. Less dust as well. I have been using the gold plus pads on front and back. They also are lasting longer.

I just changed my pads out this week.
I used the OEM pads from the Harley Dealer.
They work fine, no need to change to something else.

Also, no need to change pads that aren't worn. Whenever I have a tire replaced I have the Indy check the pads. If they won't last for the life of the new tire, I have them replaced otherwise, the pads stay.

I'm having good luck with some metalic-ceramic pads I bought on Ebay from Partsangel. These are available for '99-'07 bikes with non-Brembo brakes, but the last time I checked he had none for later-model bikes ('08<). So far they are wearing well, don't leave much dust, don't make any noise, and perform at least as well as the stock pads. I bought these on the advise of a trusted tech and I can't make any criticism of them after using them for about a year on front, six months on rear.

Here's one such auction for three sets, but oddly all his starting prices show about $800 more than they should be, obviously a glitch with eBay. The price for three sets should be $40.50 with free shipping. I need to order more myself and have an email out to him asking how to proceed.

Nothing but Lyndall pads on my bikes. Stop quicker, last longer, less dust, and no squealing.
