Default Leaking Speedo

First of all I want to thank everone who replied to my last post regarding my seating dilemma.
My new question is this -- has anyone experienced a leaking speedometer face? I bought my FLHRCI new in July '06, and on my way to my first 1600km service, I noticed the face of my speedo was all fogged up. I brought this up with the Sevice folk at the Dealer and was told it's an acknowledged problem with this bike -- and they could replace it, but until the problem is fixed (at the factory) the replacement would end with the same issue. Thinking the service guys were blowing smoke up my ***, I enquired about this issue at another dealer -- and was told that unless the speedo cannot be seen (ie. totally fogged up), I would have to live with it. Maybe it's just me, but if I spend over $20k on a motorcycle, I expect little things like the instruments to be waterproof (a'm I too picky?). Anyone able to clarify this issue for me?

I've heard about it on the forums here, some had it replace and some got the same story you relayed.

Would that be like writing them a check for about $15K for the $20K bike and telling them its for most of the cost so they will just have to live with it.

Sorry, Harleys are not waterproof.

I get fog in my speedo if the conditions are just right. I don't lose any sleep over it.

There are aftermarket guages that supposedly won't fog, but since it seems to be real important to you I'd make certain that the warranty covers it.

Just to verify, I traded my 06 Ultra for an 07 SG, but it did the same thing, (the 06) by the time I got to the dealer
it was gone.. So go figure... Try to stand your ground on the 20K issue, sometimes that'll make them fix it
so you'll go away... and an extreem measure is to throw a tantrum in the dealer floor on a Saturday afternoon... LOL..

My 2005 FLSTSCI speedo started leaking a jel looking substance inside the face at 7500 miles. It would roll around as I cornered and slide forward when I stopped. It looked to me like the LCD for the odometer had failed and was seeping fluid. I took it to my local dealer, they ordered a new speedo for me, no hassle whatsoever. The only downside is now the bike has 450 more miles on it than the odometer reads because I rode a lot more in the time I waited for the new speedo than I thought I would.

I wouldn't consider that a downside unless you like a lot of miles on the clock.

The problem with gauges isn't unique to Harleys. I sold my 2000 R1100RT with 60K on the speedo almost 2 years ago and both the tach and speedometer had problems with leakage. Both BMW's and HD's are in the $15-20K category, so, you'd think there'd be a way to avoid the problem. Never heard of a Honda doing the same thing. Just an FYI - I basically live with the problem since HD won't warranty the instrument unless it stops working (it's electronic - is anyone thinking the same thing I'm thinking?)........
