There is an older style Harley filter wrench, looks like a claw - it clamps onto the end of the filter, a socket goes over it and as you turn counter-clockwise, its grip gets tighter on the filter - impossible to slip. Although I've never had an issue with the simple end-cap style wrench either.
I've got one like that only it wasn't made by Harley Davidson. It's a real brute. You slip it over the filter and insert a 1/2" ratchet extension into the end on the filter wrench and the other end on your ratchet and turn it counter clockwise. The harder you turn it, the tighter it seats on the filter base. I've never seen the filter it couldn't remove.
