If the filter just has a tear and has not lost all of its structural integrity or shape, go to your Dealer tomorrow and pick up the correct filter wrench. It has the cut out for the stator plug and will remove even the most stubborn filter. Sounds like it was over tightened.

Carefully drive a Phillips screwdriver horizontily through filter as close to the base as possible, but not too close to hit the threads in the oil filter adapter, or best yet, borrow or purchase a large Channelock pliers and grab filter as close to base as possible. The OEM original filters are always very tight. Once off install only a K&N oil filter with welded nut on the end. One of the best filters on the market. K171C chrome about $12 bucks. Be carefull not to get into the wiring behind the filter with any tool.

Unless its mangled, I have to disagree with the channel locks and get the wrench. But thats your call? Its pretty tight getting in there. You risk damaging something else with large channel locks. Right tool for the right job. Put a little oil on the new filter gasket and turn about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past contact with the base. I have never had trouble getting OEM filters off after the first change.

I've got the filter wrench that goes on the end of the filter. However if it slips even once it's stretched and no longer works.
I've learned over the years that as soon as the filter reaches the snug point another 1/4 to 1/2 turn and no leaks.
The rubber band oil filter removal tool works too
