Apparently there is a download the moco is working on to stop the dreaded ping. One dealer told me they were removing the ecm on the 12s and sending them out to get downloaded.Which tells me they dont have it figured out yet.I ride a 10 bagger with the 103 that has the same issue in high heat under a load that scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it.Hope they figure it out!
There is some truth here, but again, AFR changes will only help with relatively minor pinging issues. All cases of pinging may not be eliminated by throwing fuel at it. Once the AFRs are within a reasonable range it is still entirely possible that you will need to alter the ignition timing... And in my opinion, ignition timing is the bigger player.
So there's "some truth" in what I said? I answered a question William The Red asked. Are you that much of a "know-it-all" that you can't stand reading advice by others without posting your own personal critique?

Dude! No need to get so bent out of shape. I was agreeing with what you said (partially) and simply adding a little clarification for the benefit of all. Richening the fuel mixture can help but it is not always enough.
If you think you can fix all cases of pinging by throwing fuel at it, then yes, I must be a "know-it-all" who doesn't really know ****. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I sure hope MOCO is doing something. Mine was pulled and sent out today for new flash.
My 2011 Limited EG with the 103 has just about driven my away from Harley. I have exhausted attempts with the dealer and MoCo. I am on my own with this. At an early stage of working with me I ended up with a SEPST and have been working with this pulling timing and adding fuel. It seems like when I think I have the pinging gone, it comes back worse than ever. Almost to the point where I just am riding it and not paying attention to the racket. Might do cams this winter, and pull the heads to have a look and see what the pistons look like. Wish I had never bought this bike. Been on alot of Harleys, this is the only one I hated. Hope you guys have better luck.
103 stock in my 11 never had any issues, but upping the compression with a stage IV started the "dreaded pinging" issue with my RG
funny how my computer in my bike allows one or two pings and then does it's own assigned job of changing timing and/or fuel delivery changes to get the motor running at better/best based upon the setup my tuner did with my SE Race Tuner. When it is 60* outside, or when I run mixed race-fuel and regular gas and the octane is much higher, either of those things are in place, and I never get any pinging. When I run into crappy gas and/or hot temps,(motor oil higher than 245) then I hear the ping and then magic happens and it doesn't ping....
Is anyone with late 12's or 13's experiencing ping this bad? I bought my RK in April '12 and i havn't had this problem at all knock on wood.....wondering if the change Moco is having everyone send thier ECM's in for went into production late in '12?
Got a new Ultra this spring and it had the dreaded ping. Took it to the dealer twice, no change and they had no answers. Did stage 1 with monster ovals and V&H fuel pack, still pinging. Changed the settings on the fuel pack a couple of times, still pinging. Got the idea that fuel was not the issue. Talked to Jamie at FM, who talked me into a cam change, TW222, Jackpot 2 1 2 head pipe and a PV with one of his dyno tunes. WOW!! what a difference. Way more power, much cooler running temps and no more ping. Loving it.

How have you been adding fuel? Did you try decreasing your lambda values in the ranges where pinging occurs? This way the adaptive fuel adjustments won't overide your AFR or VE tables. Retarding the spark for WOT might help some. But don't over do it elsewhere because that can make matters worse by increasing cylinder heat.
