I have a 2011 flhx 103 with less than 6500 miles on it.
Lately it has had issues starting. The starter sounded like it had issues that I don't want to go into. But after work today. I heard a loud bang when I started it. It sounded like a piston came through the jug and didn't start. The second attempt, it started right up and ran normally. I stopped a short distance later and inspected it. I found the housing for the starter cracked.
Anyone know what would cause this.
Well... I did some investigating and suspect that my Thundermax tuner may need to be adjusted. I haven't looked yet, but I found a lot of posts about starter kickback caused by excessive timing in the 0-256 range. It appears that it should be adjusted to 1-2 degrees. I read that the factory start timing is set to 0. I don't know what it is set at right now, so I'll have to check it and adjust it before I take the bike in for the repair. Hopefully there is no additional damage and the dealer won't investigate it too far, but I suspect that they won't care as long as they're getting paid by warranty. We'll see.

Take your Thundermax out before you go into the Dealer.
