Default Advice on used electra glide classics

Looking to find a tour bike by next spring. Limited budget (need to look for a used bike) and even more limited knowledge leads me to seeking advice on this forum - learned a lot here over the years about my NightRod.
Any particular years to shoot for and/or stay away from? What should I be looking for or looking out for? Any and all advice welcomed.

Can't go wrong with an EVO. For twin cams 02 was one of the best years, lots of updates might want to do a search. O7 was first year for 96 and 6 speed. 08 you got larger tank and bembo brakes. 09+ you get the new frame,if you have the extra coin that is the way to go IMHO.

Depends on your money. In general I would say buy the newest bike with the lowest miles that you can find for the money you have. It almost always comes down to the money thing. Lot's of nice bikes, enjoy your search, wait for that one special bike, you will know it when you see it.

Another vote for an EVO, 97 and 98 are the "modern" EVO's that are easy to buy accesories for. Can usually find a nice one for under 10K if you look hard. If your a decent wrench, you can find one that needs some love for less.

Whatever you look at make sure you road test it before you buy, some bikes even the same year just handle better then others, my 05 was the worst handling bike I ever rode, right off the showroom floor, my buddies 05 was worlds better-same bike-flht standard.

Completely agree with the road test it. I thought I was buying a bike from a friend so I did not ride it. I have put probably an extra grand or more into mine and haven't talked to a guy I used to call a friend since. From everything I have heard 2002 is one of the best years. You can find them for a good price also. Good luck

Thanks folks for the headstart. Couldn't agree more with the test ride. I wouldn't even pop for a new bike without taking it out first.

One thing that comes up in ads is "true dual exhausts" and while making an educated guess, I can't confirm an exact meaning nor a specific benefit. Advice?

Also, what add-ons would you view as the very good to have, nice to have, etc.?

I ran my '95 EG Classic to 82,000 miles

and now have an '09

the EG Classic does not have the cb radio, rear speakers and some badging and trim lights which an Ultra Classic may have. The Ultra may also have cruise, on EGC's it can be an option

In my opinion any twin cam pre 07 is not worth having- the EFI is inferior

the 09 frame is well worth.

so are brembos and ABS.

so for me either get a late model or get an evo. less cost, more reliable and a carbed model is dead easy to tune.

the twin cam 88" does not have more power than the 80" evo

"true duals" is a recent fad

each cylinder has it's own header and muffler.

there are performance trade offs for fashion.

An EVO is a good choice as well as the Tin Cam's. The early Twin Cam's had cam shoe issues. Keep an eye on this and you should be good to go.
