Default Newby from Nashville

Hello,

I'm brand new to the forum. Been looking at bikes now for a few weeks trying to decide on what to buy. I have had a couple of Harleys in the past which was an 86 Heritage and a 92 STcustom. These days I'm looking at 3 bikes. Road King, Street Glide, or an Ultra Classic. I love them all for different reasons, but it's still a hard choice. Just bought my wife a 2011 Sportster Super Lo yesterday and she is pretty jazzed. She is a new rider so I think this will be a good first bike for her.

Anyway, glad to be here and am enjoying all the reading so far. One thing however, I cannot seem to open .jpg photos. Says I dont have permissions.

Welcome to the forum, I think you need a few more posts before you're allowed to post pics.

Welcome Mike! I'm about 60 miles south of you. My suggestion would be to get the ultra. You have a dressed up full touring bike, or you can remove the pack and lowers and have the equivalent of a street glide. If you tire of the ultra goodies, sell them on eBay and get a bunch of your investment back. Either way, again, welcome to the forum!

Welcome Mike

I'm in Columbia, TN and I agree go with the ultra and get the detach kit. It's like having two bikes in one.

Since your wife rides her own bike, I'd get the street glide.
I don't like the pin striping, bag bars, fender bumpers, black gauges, white walls, etc of the ultra.

Welcome to the forum.
I have been riding dynas for many years. Two years ago I went to the Ultra. In retrospect, a move I should have made much earlier.

Started with an '87 Heritage, then '95 RoadKing, next was an '05 Classic, and Now '12 Limited. Wife has had a LowRider, Heritage, StreetGlide, and now a TriGlide, so I have had unlimited riding access to lots of models, and the Ultra is now my first choice.

Start with what ever you want, but you will eventually end up on an Ultra if you stay at it long enough.

I would just get an Ultra or Limited and strip it to a Street Glide if you want the style.

Bill

Boy,
that's a question that will elicit allot of opinions. Decide what you really need in the way of features. I live in Nashville (one of America's best kept secrets!) and I ride the Road King. It's a little lighter weight and cost. However, if you want a sound system, the Street Glide or Road Glide will provide and then if you want all out luxury with more storage and a sound system go for the Ultra. Since I don't take really long trips and I'm budgeting my $$$ (daughter in private College) the RK is just fine for me. My best deal was in the "Boro". Welcome to the forums!

I progressed (if that's the right word) from a Road King to a Street Glide and then to an Electra Glide. Because I ride solo 99% of the time, I found that the Electra Glide was just too much. Too much stuff, that is - I'm not a fan of fairings or big boxes on the back end. Yes, you can take the Tour-Pak off, I know, but that ain't cheap and it's a pain (in my opinion).

So now I'm on a Road King FLHR again and I love it. It's a solo bike, a 2-up bike, windshield off for going downtown, or windshield on for longer rides. If I go on a road trip, I add luggage, otherwise it's in the basement where it belongs.

So it depends on what you want to ride - a Road King that is pretty versatile, Street Glide which is a hot rod bagger and certainly is a looker or an Ultra which is a full dresser that's all chromed up and has about everything you could ever want for 2-up touring.

Good luck in your decision.
