Does draining oil and refilling with a heavier oil make them handle heavier load better or just make them siffer over all. Don't want to ruin the ride but don't want to bottom or ruff bridge transitions either.
Heaver oil makes them react slower over all ,increase dampening. Load is determined in air shocks by the amount of air (same as changing spring rates).
To the OP, the SG shocks are 1" shorter and have 1" less overall travel than the original stock shocks you had. Its important to be sure the SG shocks are working correctly since they already have less travel, you should drain al oil from them and refill to be sure they are able to work correctly. The stock HD air shocks are marginal at their best anyway.
FYI after installing the shocks get an air pump to put the air back in that is lost when you replace the shocks. Well not after but before. This maybe a no brainer to some but since it was my first time I did not take that into account. I knew I had to put some air back in so I rode up to the WalletDrainer (Harley Store) and inquired about the PSI and shocks. Well I purchased the Harley Shock Air pressure gauge and pump, got home and realized I had no air in shocks. After fidgeting with the air lines I was finally able to get air in and the PSI's to 15.
sometimes if the shock is leaking air you can pull the hoses out of the red connectors by pushing the connector in and pulling out the hose, get a nice straight clean cut past where you will see the indentation in the hose, and reinsert the hose, none of my bikes ever lost 7 lbs in a short amount of time.
dam guys thanks for all the replies. i forgot to subscribe to thread and thought i was left out in the cold. The Shocks came off an 11' Street Glide there was noticable leakage but if that is normal then its ok. I was worried about them being bad. I'm gonna slap them on the bike this weekend and see how she rides. I need to do a bit more research on this as I ride 2 up alot and dont want to compromise the comfort of the ride then again it is sitting up too high...when I come to a stop its a hassle everytime. So maybe using better or will let me have my cake and lick it to.
thanks again for all the help
I hate to tell you but the stock Street Glide shocks suck. That was one of the first things i replaced on my Street Glide. I ended up with a set of the Harley Premium Low shocks. They are the same shocks that come stock on the CVO Street Glide. I went through a set of Progressive and Race Techs before settling on the Harley shocks. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
the stock HD air shocks do not raise and lower the bike, only make it harder to bottom out with stiffer movement... Repeat, these shocks will not raise or lower your bike via air pressure.
And they suck as shocks as well.

You are right but the stock Street Glide shocks are 12 in vs 13 in on the Road King, so yes it will sit lower with Street Glide shocks. The trade off is the ride will be much harsher.
