Default Is it too far gone?

I may be able to get my hands on a 2006 Road Glide that has been left to die and I can't stand to watch it happen. The problem is that it has spent most of its life neglected outside at the beach. Corrosion, rust and sun damage everywhere. I know it would require a complete tear down and alot of new parts. I guess what I need to know is if it would be worth the trouble of rebuilding if I can get the bike for cheap enough? I have been looking for a project for the winter i'm just not sure I should mess with this one. I appreciate any advice you could give.

I think if it was just mechanical it would be no big deal. Being that it lived near the ocean with salt water....it may be cheeper to buy a new one

I am sure others will agree that we need to see some pictures of the bike to give decent advise. Also, hard to say if its a good deal or not unless you tell us what you can get the bike for? How many miles?

Do an inventory of parts you can see that need replacing, figure in paint and labor and see if the initial cost of "seen" issues are overwhelming versus just finding a nice used bike at a deal. Of coarse alot of it is up to you, your abilities, how much your own labor is worth and if you plan on keeping it or selling.

If the price is right, go for it.. The Softail in my sig pic was left to die at the beach, it spent 5 years outside right by the ocean and not even a cheap tarp over it..

It had to be taken down to the frame, all wiring replaced (the connectors will corrode beyond repair) and all hydraulics rebuilt.. Chrome gone on everything, giant flakes with white powder underneath... The cylinders also were pitted and replaced, motor rebuilt, ect... So sad 1996 model with 4500 miles on it bought in 2007 and the motor was rusted from the inside..

If you have the skills to rebuild it yourself, have the patience to shop for parts online to get great deals, it would be a great project..

If you plan to have someone else do the work, don't do it!!

I picked up my project for $2000 and spent $2500 more to make it what it is, took 6 months... I couldn't be happier with my $4500 ride...

Depends, how much can you get that bike for?

Unfortunately this is the only pic I have.
My wheels started turning while I was at the beach this weekend and came across this bike. I got the low down on the bike from the security at the condo. The owner is a resident and I'm currently trying to get in contact with him. I wish I had taken some more pics before I left but I didn't really start thinking about it till I got home. From a distance It looks great aside from the flat tire. Up close not so much. I'm unsure of the mileage but it is obvious the owner is done with it and left where it is headed quick for the scrap heap. The Cancer has started on the frame and all the aluminum is oxidzed. The Controls and gauges are all intact but sun faded. the rotors and lines are all rusted. Given the conditon I was thinking of offering him no more than $2000 maybe less when I get more details.

I'd start with $1000, simply explaining that the whole bike needs to be totally redone as gigawitz testified to above, you can always go up, if you say 1 and he says three, you can meet at 2k and be satisfied, but you might be lucky and he'll take $1k

You guys are silly, $1000, really? It's a Harley!!! I would say if you can get that bike for any less than $4000 it's a steal... going to take another 2-4k to make it new again so if you wind up with a 2006 Harley for even 8k jump on it...

Thats a good point. I've always been better at fixing things than I have wheeling and dealing!
