I had some questions on wiring harness differences. I have a 98 FLHT and and am finally ready to wire it up. I got a wiring harness with the bike but I'm assuming it's the wrong one because there are no plugs for the dash or gauges or anything. The only two plugs in the front that matched were the two that ran up the handlebars and then the air lines for the shocks.
My question is this, Could there be two different harnesses for it? Possibly one that runs the dash and gauges and lights and the rest that run controls? I doubt it but it's worth asking.
My next question is if this wiring harness is wrong, how would I decide one which one I need if I bought a used one. I'm looking on Ebay and I don't know how to tell the difference between those and the one I already have other than to trust the seller....
Any help would be awesome because I'm stumped! Thanks!
The main wiring harness for all FLHT/FLTR models (70985-98) runs from front to back. It has two plug on the front that plug into the Interconnect harness (70232-98) inside the Fairing, not the Handlebar controls. The Interconnect harness has the plug for the handlebars, gages and all items in the fairing (except for any Ultra equipment). If you are going to connect any Ultra equipment, you also need the Ultra Overlay (70160-98).
I have the manual. I just wanted to know if there were two different wiring harnesses and how to tell the difference between them. Also, I need to know how to decipher which one I already have ( if it even belongs with the bike).
So... What I have is just the main harness and not the Ultra overlay? It will plug into one black plug and one gray plug that run up the bars.
And to plug in the entire front fairing (gauges, lights, etc.) I will need the Ultra overlay?
Sorry, I'm confused. haha Thanks for the info and part numbers. I really appreciate that!
I don't know what harness you have. Both Handlebar controls and the interconect harness use 12 pin plugs.
When I had my '98 Ultra, I bought both Service manuals and part catalogs. This way I didn't work in the dark.
A good place to start....Does the wiring harness have still have the part-number attached?
Be familiar with certain connectors....such as the two prong neutral switch connector plus the horn connectors. These are fairly easy to recognize and fairly unique to other connectors. The antenna connector is definately unique. These will help in aide of knowing which harness you have.
Prior to 1998, the neutral switch was a one prong.
