After reading through all the responses...

Only two people, that I saw, may have checked their manual. Yes, the manual indeed does have a description of the warm up procedure in it.

Besides considering lubrication, you may be surprised, but different parts may take more or less time to warm up. Some parts are forged, some are cast. Forged parts take more time to warm up than cast parts do.

And, as stated previously by another responder, carb'd bikes have a slightly different warm up procedure than EFI.

Aside from that, you should also take into consideration that we are talking about an internal combustion engine, which can and will cause the cylinder walls to glaze over if left at idle for long periods of time. I'm quite sure that no one here can 'feel' that, or tell in any manner other than when the smoke starts to puff, when it is time to check the internals...

My '05 Heritage demands at least 30 seconds of warm up or she "clunks" when I shift into first. SJ Ron

I start mine up before gearing up, which is a few minutes, than get on and go.

For both EFI and Carbed engines, H-D owner's manuals state:

The engine should be allowed to run slowly for 15-30 seconds. This will allow the engine to warm up and let oil reach all surfaces needing lubrication. Failure to comply can result in engine damage. (00563b)

Direct from the H-D manual for a carbed engine:

Cool Engine

Outside Temperature Cooler Than 60° F (16° C)

Turn the fuel valve to the ON position.

BE SURE THROTTLE IS CLOSED.

Pull enrichener **** to full-out position.

Turn the ignition/headlamp key switch ON and press starter switch to operate the electric starter.

Raise jiffy stand.

After initial 15-30 second warm-up, ride for 3 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) with enrichener **** in full-out position.

After 3 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 kilometers), push the enrichener **** in to the 1/2 way position. Ride 2 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 kilometers).

After 2 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 kilometers), push the enrichener **** fully-in.

NOTE:
If outside temperature is cooler than 20° F (7° C) it may be necessary to roll the throttle 2 or 3 times.

Outside Temperature Warmer Than 60° F (16° C)

Turn the fuel valve to the ON position.

BE SURE THROTTLE IS CLOSED.

Pull enrichener **** to full-out position.

Turn the ignition/headlamp key switch on and press starter switch to operate the electric starter.

Raise jiffy stand.

After initial 15-30 second warm-up, ride for 1 minute or 1/2 mile (0.8 kilometer) with enrichener **** in full-out position.

After 1 minute or 1/2 mile (0.8 kilometer), push the enrichener **** in to the 1/2 way position. Ride 1 minute or a 1/2 mile (0.8 kilometer).

After 1 minute or 1/2 mile (0.8 kilometer), push the enrichener **** fully-in.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
By comparison, here is all the owner's manual says for an EFI engine.

Press the starter button to start the motorcycle.

When the engine has started, you can operate your motorcycle as you normally would after raising the jiffy stand.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
YMMV
