It seems that I have an issue with my charging system. Problem started about three weeks ago. Ride to work 5 days a week and as I ride the voltmeter in the dash goes from 14.5 to 0 (intermittent). It stays at zero for most of the 15 mile ride. My red engine light also comes on and off as I ride and it stays mostly off. The voltmeter and the red engine light are doing their thing separately for the most part. Very seldom the meter reads 0 and the light is on. The bike runs great...no issues...all lights on and the cd player. Bike starts right up every time. I'm worried.... live in Miami and going to Daytona next month and then to Georgia. Don't want to get stranded. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Jump off that bridge when you get to it.
Oh, and make sure the battery cables are clean and TIGHT, I don't know how many times people expect big problems, and the battery cables are loose, causes all kinds of weird things to happen.

This man speaks the truth with that statement, dont ask how I know.
Live and learn
If you can measure across the battery terminals while the bike's voltmeter is reading zero, that will be a great help. If the hand meter tells you 14.5 volts, then there is an electrical fault in the wiring to the bike's meter. That may also be a loose connection or trapped wire, as it sometime reads fine.
I dont know if thet changed from 03 to 06 but I was haveing the same trouble as you say you have and it was where the wires olug into the bottom of the regulstor they were just soose it is kind of a twist lock just trist it clockwise a little
and all was good to go
Batt read 12.5 volts not running and 14.4 while engine was running. Thanks for replies ....will check batt cables and check reg wires. Any other ideas? Thanks

Was that at 2,000 rpms? If so you are looking at a stator , and regulator replacement.
