My fell off while in Colorado a couple years back. I got lucky as the shift wedged between my front covers and frame and was able to re install on site. Now, I carry a extra shifter in my tool kit. They do come off.

Years ago, I lost my shifter on a Honda 350. Buzzing down the road, I looked down, it was gone!
Talk about luck - in my little tool bag, I had a small pair of Vice Grips (My "Clip" - some may know what I mean) so I clamped it down on the shifter shaft and I bet I rode with it that way for 6 months or more! And it kept the clip handy!
