Default new guy looking at a 2000 FLHPI, any tips or input?

coming back to the harley world. used to have a 73 ironhead and am wanting a nice cruiser. found a deal to get me started again.

it's a 2000 road king police edition. waiting to hear back on the maintenance record which will be a big factor. i've read the cam tensioners can be an issue. any other major thing to look out for?

i'll go through it and check the obvious stuff, just curious if you guys can recommend some certain things to check out.

thanks
mike

here's a couple pics. bike has 46k miles on it

I have a 2000 Road King Police also. Mine doesn't have the fairing and the bags have the regular latches though. I've only had it for a year, but I love it. Right now I've been taking it apart and fixing/swapping some things and getting it repainted. Still have yet to take it on a long trip, but I'm looking forward to it.

That one looks like a well taken care of bike. Might want to ask if the current owner knows anything about the cam chain tensioners and if they've been changed recently. The big twins have thing with those, some people never have a problem, some have them go bad pretty quick. I checked mine the other day and the plastic was just about worn down to the metal. I figured since I already have it all open I'll replace them.

looks like a pretty good deal, what's the pipes situation, can't really tell by pictures. You can also offer him less, most people will accept a little less than the asking price and heck for that price, just take care of the cam situation right away and whatever else and you're good to go.

If I'm not mistaken...

I have a '99 FLHPI, and there were recalls for the main breaker, and the cam sprocket bolt. The tensioners, as mentioned above, and inner cam bearings were also an issue. The 2000 may be in the same group, you will have to check.

About three years ago, I inquired about the main breaker recall, and the moco honored it's replacement still at that late date. It was only about 6-8 bucks back then, but with the recall kit they replace the eyelets with quality pieces also, all on the MOCO's dollar.

Forgot to mention, that you got a better deal than I did. And your ride looks much better!

great. thanks for the responses guys. got some more info on the bike.

unfortunately he doesn't know the maintenance history on it. he and people who have heard it think it has some aftermarket cams in it. bike was stripped down the frame for the paint work. so that's good. it has a power commander and maybe some other stuff but he's not too sure.

running gear is in good shape. i really like it and may just go with it and go through the maintenance procedures right away for peace of mind.

more to follow, hopefully.

thanks
mike
