You need to watch which Hella reflector you get. The E-code is ment for motorcycles and is dot legal. It does not have the aiming points (for a commercial headlight aiming tool to attach to). The face is almost flat and the light pattern is evenly across the road and has a bump in the light pattern that lights up the right hand side shoulder / ditch better.
Hella part number 002395991
Did you mean to say the Hella is "not" for motorcycles and "not" legal or DOT approved? That is a valid consideration, however if you drive at night, it is quite obvious on the roads today that police are not enforcing "legal" head lights in automobiles, so I highly doubt they are going to nitpick over a motorcycle head light. If they do, take the warning or pay the fine and move on. I used a different Hella Part #1A6 002.395-031, anyway it works fantastic with about any bulb, I just cant justify the cost of LED so I can brag that I have the latest and greatest lighting technology on my bike.
From what I'm reading here and it was in the text from this previous link as well. Thanks old v twin for that first link.
These are legal for motorcycles, just not other road going vehicles... Both state, "These lamp are not DOT approved except for motorcycles and are sold for off-road and racing purposes only."
There are other offerings from Hella that are legal for all DOT applications, if that is a concern. Hope that clarifies things just a bit.

I have heard good things about the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulbs
It's DOT approved, which means it is no brighter than any other DOT bulb.I measured the voltage at my headlight earlier, got 12.2 volts, motor running.I f you want more light from a halogen bulb, you need a relay and heavirt ga wire to get full voltage at the bulb. You'll also be better off with a 65/70 nonDOT osram bulb.Just remember your new bulb, while it is now much brighter is also hotter, which will decrease service life..................................

The Hella E-code IS DOT approved for use on motorcycles.
When you install this reflector how do you align the light?
I like to put a stub phillips screw driver in my pocket and go for a ride. I stop and adjust the light to where I want it to shine. Lining up the hot spot on a mark on the wall doesn't allways work.
